Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach is offering a unique opportunity for young adults to gain hands-on work experience and professional training through its Fire Corps Program. In partnership with the Long Beach Fire Department, the Economic Development Department is now accepting applications for the second cohort of the Program.
The Program, aimed at individuals between the ages of 18 and 30, provides a seven-month course consisting of paid work experience, monthly workshops, and professional trainings such as CPR certification and Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training. Eligible candidates are encouraged to apply online by Monday, Oct. 20, 2025.
Mayor Rex Richardson expressed his enthusiasm for the Program, stating that it reflects the city's commitment to investing in youth and creating pathways to promising careers in public service. "By opening doors within our Fire Department, we are helping young people unlock their potential, gain experience and embrace the spirit of service that defines our community," he said.

Facilitated by the Economic Development's Long Beach Workforce Innovation Network (LBWIN) Youth Career Services Center, interns will work within the Fire Prevention Bureau's Community Services Division to support various communications-related activities and special events such as the annual Spark of Love Toy Drive and Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach. Participants will be compensated $22 per hour for a maximum of 400 hours. Priority will be given to Long Beach residents.
Long Beach Fire Chief Dennis Buchanan also expressed his support for the Program, stating that it not only provides valuable hands-on experience but also instills core values such as dedication, teamwork, and community service. "We look forward to welcoming a new cohort of motivated young people ready to make a difference in Long Beach," he said.
Bo Martinez, Director of the Economic Development Department, highlighted the successes of the first cohort which consisted of 10 participants. Several played pivotal roles in providing support for residents impacted by the Pacific Palisades Fires earlier this year, and one participant even secured employment with the Fire Department upon completion of the internship.
