~ In the midst of a devastating wildfire crisis in Los Angeles, Governor Gavin Newsom has taken swift action to increase aid and resources for those affected. Today, he announced that he has doubled the deployment of California National Guard personnel to 1,680 service members.
These brave men and women are joining the thousands of responders already on the ground, working tirelessly to combat the hurricane-force firestorm and ensure the safety of local communities. Governor Newsom expressed his gratitude for their bravery and commitment to serving others during this critical time.
The additional deployment includes over 1,000 servicemembers from the Military Police Forces who are stationed at traffic control points to maintain public safety. This support also helps build capacity for local law enforcement in their respective areas.
The remaining service members are focused on wildfire suppression operations through Task Force Rattlesnake, as well as handcrews training at Camp Roberts and aviation resources. In total, California has mobilized over 12,000 personnel including firefighters, guard service members, highway patrol officers, and transportation teams to combat the ongoing fires.

To aid in these efforts, there are also more than 1,660 pieces of firefighting apparatus deployed including engines, aircrafts, dozers, and water tenders. On Tuesday, Governor Newsom declared a state of emergency and issued an executive order to support affected communities. President Biden quickly approved a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration on Wednesday to further assist with response efforts.
For those impacted by the fires in Los Angeles County, disaster assistance is available through various channels such as DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 800-621-3362. The state has also launched a new website – CA.gov/LAfires – as a hub for information and resources from state, local, and federal government agencies.
Governor Newsom's swift actions demonstrate his commitment to supporting Californians during this crisis. As he continues to work towards providing aid and resources for those affected by the wildfires, he urges individuals and businesses to seek assistance and stay informed through the various channels available.
