SANTA ANA, Calif. - Californer -- Internet Equality Summit
ALX events has partnered with the Social Media Freedom Foundation to present the 2023 Internet Equality Summit (IES) charity event May 11th & 12th in Orange County, California. This non-partisan event provides the opportunity to hear from experts in the field about the latest advances in internet policy and regulation. We are thrilled to announce online entrepreneur Jason Fyk and New York Times best-selling author Jonathan Taplin will be joining the IES speaker lineup.
Jason Fyk
At the height of his social media career, Jason Fyk built an audience in excess of 38 million followers, only to have them unlawfully stripped away by Facebook. In 2018, Fyk sued Facebook for anticompetitive misconduct and took his case all the way to the Supreme Court without a single hearing or leave to amend. As a result of the court's denying Fyk proper Due Process, he filed what is believed to be the first ever direct Constitutional Challenge of Section 230 against the United States government.

Recently, Fyk filed a second Petition for Writ of Certiorari (22-753) to the United States Supreme Court, posing several questions. Among them are whether Section 230(c)(1) provides any protection for conduct, if the "Good Samaritan" provision applies to the entire statute, and if Section 230 violates the 5th Amendment by constituting an illegal regulatory taking. Additionally, he is the founder of the Social Media Freedom Foundation 501(c)(3) non-profit organization (socialmediafreedom.org).
Jason breaks down Section 230 and the need for reform as he tells of his experience in his session: "Section 230: What it means and what they thought it meant."
Jonathan Taplin
Jonathan Taplin is the author of Move Fast and Break Things: How Facebook, Google, and Amazon Cornered Culture and Undermined Democracy, The Magic Years: Scenes From a Rock and Roll Life, and the forthcoming The End of Reality: How 4 Billionaires Are Selling a Fantasy Future of the Metaverse, Mars, and Crypto. His commentary has appeared in The New York Times, Washington Post, Time Magazine, The Huffington Post, The Guardian, Medium, The Washington Monthly, and the Wall Street Journal. He is the Director Emeritus of the Annenberg Innovation Lab at the University of Southern California and the Chairman of the Americana Music Foundation.

Internet governance policy has been left in the dust as Generative AI is already swiftly being trained on limitless intellectual property. AI content is used to generate profit with no regard to copyright. Jonathan will take a deep dive into this subject in his session: "How can regulators keep a bead on a target moving at quantum speed?"
