Annual 'Independence from Hunger' Campaign Brings Community Together to Provide Choice, Support, and Dignity as Summer Food Costs Rise

VENTURA, Calif. - Californer -- As Ventura County reaches the middle of summer, local businesses and residents are coming together to ensure every family has a reliable bridge during seasonal food shortages. PODS Local is proud to join forces with Grocery Outlet Thousand Oaks for its annual Independence from Hunger campaign, directing community-wide support to the Manna Conejo Valley Food Bank.

Summer can bring quiet financial challenges for many local households. With school meal programs paused for the break and grocery costs continuing to rise, family budgets often face extra strain. Rather than navigating these adjustments alone, the Conejo Valley and Thousand Oaks community is stepping up to ensure every neighbor feels cared for and supported throughout the season.

Restoring Dignity Through Choice

The food drive goes on through July 31 to support The Manna Conejo Valley Food Bank, an organization that offers a thoughtful, human-centered approach to food assistance. Unlike traditional pantries that hand out pre-packed boxes of non-perishable goods, Manna operates as a choice-based, free grocery store.

Families walk the aisles with shopping carts, selecting the fresh produce, dairy, protein, and pantry staples that best fit their household's specific tastes and dietary needs. This grocery store model honors personal choice, preserves family dignity, and ensures that every item taken home is something the family will genuinely enjoy and use.

"Community strength comes from neighbors coming together to support neighbors," said Steve Yapp, Owner of PODS Santa Barbara. "When school is out and household budgets feel the extra weight of rising food costs, campaigns like Independence from Hunger provide a vital bridge. We are honored to partner with Grocery Outlet Thousand Oaks in supporting Manna Conejo Valley Food Bank. Manna's grocery store approach treats every guest with respect and dignity, and together, our community can ensure no family feels left without a seat at the table this summer."
