~ The City of San José welcomed the Lord Mayor of Dublin and a Dublin City Council delegation on March 8th, 2023 to celebrate the 37-year San José Dublin sister city relationship. This is the first official visit to San José by a delegation from Dublin since March 2019.

The visit by Lord Mayor Caroline Conroy and a Dublin City Council delegation will take place from March 8th to 12th, and is an opportunity to engage in discussions on shared challenges and learn about the City's services and programs. The public events include a Flag Raising Ceremony of the Irish and Dublin flags scheduled for today, March 8th at 10 a.m. at San José City Hall Plaza (200 E. Santa Clara Street), that includes remarks by San José Mayor Matt Mahan, the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councilor Caroline Conroy, and Ireland Consul General Micheál Smith. Members of the San José City Council will also attend. The delegation will also participate in the San José Shamrock 5K Run/Walk, scheduled for Saturday, March 11th at 9 a.m. at San Pedro Square with remarks by Mayor Matt Mahan and the Lord Mayor of Dublin.

"I am delighted to be leading the first Dublin delegation to San José in 4 years and reconnecting in person with our colleagues here in San Jose City Council," said Lord Mayor Caroline Conroy. "We have a varied itinerary covering areas of interest including housing & homelessness, youth services, economic development, climate action and smart cities. And I'm particularly looking forward to meeting the people of San José at the Shamrock Run."

San José Mayor Matt Mahan expressed his appreciation for this opportunity: "San José has enjoyed a long and close relationship with Dublin," he said. "We appreciate the opportunity to share and learn from our sister city as we tackle similar challenges and work to create a better future for our respective residents."

City Manager Jennifer Maguire added: "The San José Dublin Sister City program is one of eight sister city affiliations that San José has established with cities from across the globe. The sister city relationship offers opportunities to learn from one another and celebrate each other's cultures," she said. "In honor of our international guests, I invite the community to participate in the flag-raising ceremony and Shamrock run/walk."

The relationship between San José-Dublin was initiated in 1986 by then Mayor of San José Tom McEnery, and former Prime Minister Bertie Ahern who was then Lord Mayor of Dublin Ireland at that time. With more than one million residents, San José is one of Northern California's largest cities as well as one of America's most diverse large cities; it has become an innovation center with many technology companies located there due to its transformation over time into a global hub for technology companies worldwide.. In 2011, Envision San José 2040 was adopted which set forth long-term growth plans for anticipated growth through 2040 as well as providing guidance on how best to achieve this growth plan over time..
