~ The City of San José has appointed Rick Bruneau as the new Director of Finance, effective April 2, 2023. The appointment was made by City Manager Jennifer Maguire after a nationwide recruitment.

Maguire expressed her confidence in Bruneau's financial experience and said that it will help the city to continue to achieve accolades and maintain its commitment to long-term financial stability for the benefit of its residents, businesses, and investors. Mayor Matt Mahan also praised Bruneau's insight into ways to improve upon San José's already strong revenue management and accounting functions.

Bruneau has 15 years of experience driving strategic and operational excellence and delivering digital transformation initiatives. He began his career in 2008 with the United States Department of Defense as a financial auditor before moving into the private sector as a Lead Financial Analyst for Morpho Detection, Inc., and then joining the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco in 2013 to lead the strategic finance function for the National Cash Business Line. In 2018, he joined the City of San José's Finance Department as a Deputy Director of the Revenue Management, Banking, and Administration Division. In this capacity, he initiated and implemented various strategic financial initiatives such as business tax amnesty program, business tax online registration portal, multiple web payment sites and request forms. He also played an important role in securing new and ongoing revenues for the City. In 2021, he became the Finance Department's Controller as Deputy Director overseeing Accounting Division including a City-Wide Fiscal Recovery and Grants Management Unit.

Bruneau holds a Master of Business Administration from University of Massachusetts Amherst MA, Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Eastern Connecticut State University Willimantic CT., and is also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). He expressed his honor at being appointed to this role by Maguire, Mahan, and City Council members while expressing his passion for operational excellence.

The Finance Department is responsible for managing, protecting and reporting on San José's financial resources to enhance its financial condition for residents, businesses and investors. It works with several other departments in Strategic Support City Service Area to develop manage safeguard fiscal physical technological human resources enable enhance delivery services projects. The department has an annual operating budget $25.4 million 134 employees
