The Rev. James Morris Lawson, Jr. was a lifelong proponent of social change through peaceful protest. Frequently dubbed an "architect of the Civil Rights Movement," Rev. Lawson drew on the teachings of Mahatma Mohandas K. Ghandi to steer the movement's vanguard toward nonviolent solutions to labor abuses and Jim Crow laws, which often went hand in hand. He continued to teach nonviolence through monthly Soulforce workshops at Holman United Methodist Church, where he served as senior pastor for 25 years and as Pastor Emeritus after his retirement in 1999.
