CARDIFF BY THE SEA, Calif. - Californer -- The Art of Diplomacy was first inspired quite serendipitously when the author was the owner of out-of-print and antiquarian bookstores. It was there that he acquired the personal library, photos, letters, and official documents of a high level US intelligence agent who during the 1920s and '30s befriended many of Japan's most influential leaders, including members of the Japanese Royal Family. Together, these representatives of the East and the West heroically strove to maintain goodwill between their nations. One of this US secret agent's closest allies was Prince Tokugawa, a masterful international statesman and humanitarian, who, in many ways was the true power behind the Imperial Throne. If not for his untimely death in 1940, Tokugawa might well have prevented Japan from joining the Axis Powers in WWII.
This biography is richly illustrated with hundreds of significant and engaging photos, many rare and never-before-available. They reveal a new perspective on US-Japan relations during the first half of the twentieth century.
