As power outages grow longer and more frequent across California, rural energy resilience consultancy Justplug outlines four paths to energy independence for rural homeowners, from new-build off-grid systems to grid-independent conversions.
LOS ANGELES - Californer -- Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) outages have averaged 41 hours across California's major utilities, with the longest recorded outage lasting more than six days, according to research group PSE Healthy Energy.
Southern California Edison (SCE) projects a 20–40% increase in both the frequency and duration of PSPS outages this fire season as high-fire-risk areas expand to new circuits and customers.
For grid-tied properties, being connected to the grid isn't the same as being protected from outages. A multi-day outage can put irrigation, food preservation, and the health of both people and animals at risk.
For property owners considering a new build or weighing off-grid for the first time, the math has flipped. Modern solar and battery technology now often costs less than running a new power line to a remote site, which also comes with a permanent monthly bill. Off-grid energy infrastructure has become an economical choice, rather than a fallback option for rural properties.

Justplug, a rural energy resilience consultancy based in Caliente, helps property owners achieve energy independence:
- New property development. A new build is the perfect opportunity to do it once and do it right with a whole-property off-grid solar solution.
- Staying grid-tied with added resilience. A grid-independent solar solution covers day-to-day load to lower bills and protect the property from outages.
- Converting an existing grid-tied solar system. Properties with net-metered solar that no longer pencils out can convert to a grid-independent setup.
- Upgrading an aging off-grid system. Justplug troubleshoots, fine-tunes, and modernizes older systems to match current demand.
