Governor Newsom calls for congressional investigation into vile, antisemitic and violent messages from MAGA organization

What you need to know:
Governor Newsom today sent a formal request to the U.S. House Oversight Committee to investigate Republican National Committee (RNC) linked groups after private group chats revealed explicit praise for Hitler, calls to send political opponents "to the gas chamber," racist slurs, and endorsements of rape against women.

SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom today formally requested that the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform open an investigation into the shocking and deeply offensive text messages sent by leaders of Republican National Committee (RNC) linked organizations across the country.

In his letter to Committee Chairman James Comer, Governor Newsom detailed a series of abhorrent messages uncovered by Politico in group chats among Young Republican leaders that advocate sending political opponents "to the gas chamber," express "love [for] Hitler," use patently racist slurs for racial minorities, endorse rape and other violence against women, and, promote radical antisemitic ideology.

Calling for gas chambers. Expressing love for Hitler. Endorsing rape. Using racist slurs. This is not a 'joke,' and it is not fringe. These are leaders within Republican National Committee-linked groups. If Congress can investigate universities for failing to stop antisemitism, it must also investigate politicians' own allies who are openly celebrating it.

The Governor noted that the Committee is currently investigating Harvard University and other institutions over alleged failures to sufficiently address antisemitism on college campuses. Several individuals involved in the Young Republican text messages have been directly engaged in activities on college campuses — making the need for a full investigation even more urgent.

Department of Justice can't be trusted

Vice President J.D. Vance and other Republican officials have refused to unequivocally condemn the invocation of gas chambers or rape. Given this disturbing silence from national Republican leadership, the Governor warned that federal agencies —including the Department of Justice and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission — cannot be trusted to investigate conduct from groups politically aligned with the Vice President.
