~ SACRAMENTO - As the state of California continues to face extreme heat and critical fire weather conditions, Governor Gavin Newsom has taken proactive measures to ensure the safety of its residents. At his direction, the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) has approved the predeployment of additional firefighting resources to Placer and Calaveras counties.

The predeployment includes eight fire engines and three water tenders, which will be stationed in these counties through Tuesday. This decision comes in response to expected high temperatures, low humidity, and dry lightning that could potentially lead to wildfires. These resources are in addition to those that were predeployed earlier this week in Southern California.

In total, 73 fire engines, 20 water tenders, nine bulldozers, five helicopters, 10 hand crews, 16 dispatchers, and two Incident Management Teams have been approved for predeployment to 12 counties across the state. These include Inyo, Kern, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Sierra, Nevada, Plumas, Placer and Calaveras counties. The allocation of these resources is coordinated by local officials based on their assessment of potential risks in their communities.

This proactive approach has proven to be a critical component of California's wildfire response strategy. By having resources ready to respond quickly in areas where they are most needed, fires can be contained before they escalate into major incidents. This is in addition to the state's Fire and Rescue Mutual Aid System which provides emergency response support throughout California.

With extreme heat forecasted for much of the state this week, California has entered Phase 2 of its extreme temperature response plan. This involves ramping up coordination between state and local agencies to prepare for extreme heat conditions. The State Operations Center at Cal OES is on an enhanced watch for both heat and fire conditions while cooling centers have been opened in communities across the state to protect vulnerable residents.

Governor Newsom urges Californians to remain vigilant during this period of heightened heat and fire weather. He reminds residents to have a wildfire action plan in place, sign up for local emergency alerts, and visit CalHeatScore.CalEPA.ca.gov for heat safety information specific to their area. For more information on fire safety and general preparedness, residents can visit Ready.ca.gov.
