Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach has announced the appointment of Bryce M. Tyler as the new Director of the Human Resources Department. This decision was made by City Manager Tom Modica, who believes that Mr. Tyler's extensive experience and leadership skills make him the ideal candidate for this critical position.
With over 20 years of experience in the public sector, Mr. Tyler is a distinguished human resources executive who has a proven track record of delivering strategic innovation and effective leadership. After an extensive national recruitment process, he stood out as the top candidate for the job and will officially begin his role on March 24, 2025.

"His expertise and experience in delivering efficient and transformative HR solutions make him a valuable addition to our team. We look forward to his leadership in enhancing our hiring and recruitment practices and supporting our incredible workforce."

In his new role, Mr. Tyler will oversee a team of approximately 111 department staff and will be responsible for meeting the human resource needs of over 6,100 City employees. He will play a crucial role in shaping the City's human capital strategies by managing labor relations, employee relations, benefits, organizational development, talent recruitment and retention, salary and classification administration, among other critical HR functions.
The City's Human Resources Department has already made significant progress in modernizing and centralizing its processes by streamlining workflows and improving service delivery across the organization. These efforts have resulted in a more efficient operational framework for supporting the City's workforce. As Director, Mr. Tyler will continue these efforts and also lead the implementation of Measure JB - a voter-approved charter amendment that aims to merge the Civil Service and HR Departments into one unified hiring department.

"I am honored to be entrusted with the responsibility of leading the City's efforts in delivering high-quality HR services in a transparent, innovative, and collaborative manner."

Prior to joining the City of Long Beach, Mr. Tyler served as the Interim Director of Human Resources for the City of Huntington Park, where he oversaw all HR operations and modernized HR systems. He also held key leadership positions with multiple departments for the County of Los Angeles, including serving as the Director of Human Resources for both the Internal Services Department and the Public Defender's Office.
Mr. Tyler holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from California State University, Long Beach (Cal State Long Beach). He has also completed Los Angeles County's Executive Leadership Development Program from the University of Southern California's Sol Price School of Public Policy and is a Senior Certified Professional (IPMA-HR).
Not only does Mr. Tyler bring extensive experience and qualifications to his new role, but he also has strong roots in Long Beach. He was born and raised in North Long Beach and is an alumnus of both Long Beach Polytechnic High School and Cal State Long Beach. In his free time, he enjoys playing golf and spending time with his family.
