Hoops Prospects Bolsters Staff with an International Basketball Expert
NEW YORK - Californer -- In the ever-changing basketball world, scouting and roster management is more important than ever. At the same time, many colleges and professional teams cannot afford a full-time staff to dedicate to these growing challenges. Since 2020, Hoops Prospects (HP) has been offering catered analysis and advice on a case-by-case basis to both college and international teams at a very reasonable price, and starting this season, HP is adding experienced staff dedicated to this specific area.
HP is in a unique position to aid in the evaluation of talent and fit, especially in terms of prospects playing college ball in America or playing pro ball in the G League. Every season, HP's complete draft board ranks more than 1,300 NBA Draft eligible prospects from across the world, and in the process, the HP staff has compiled vast knowledge of current prospects and professionals between the ages of 18 and 29.
When speaking to HP Managing Director Richard Harris, he said that there has never been a bigger need for the services that Hoops Prospects can provide. "The transfer portal has completely changed college basketball," Harris said. "This year, more than 3,000 DI and DII transfers were in the portal, while most colleges cannot afford to have a full-time Director of Player Personnel, let alone a player personnel staff. This burden often falls to the coaching and scouting staff, who cannot monitor every potential transfer during the season. This means they can't see the entire picture and often seem to settle for the first transfers who agree to sign. As a result, you see many college rosters that are just slapped together, without giving the appropriate attention to fit."

Much the same can be said about most international pro teams, which typically use their coaching staff and a couple of front-office workers to coach, scout, manage the roster, and run basketball operations. "Unless you are a club the size of Real Madrid, you have a few people trying to do everything. It's not a great blueprint for success because there are just too many players to scout. It's difficult to effectively develop your current team and scout your upcoming opponents, if you are worrying about building your roster for next season," Harris stated.
To meet the rising demand, Hoops Prospects has bolstered its consulting staff with the addition of Guy Muya, who has extensive experience as a player, scout, coach, and front-office director at the international level. From 2000 to 2019, Muya played professionally in Europe, winning the Belgian League Championship with Oostende in 2015 and qualifying for the European Championships with the Belgian National Team in 2011 and 2013. Between 2019 to 2024, he served as both an assistant coach and the Sports Director for Antwerp in the BNXT League. Antwerp steadily improved during Muya's tenure, achieving a 44-14 record over the past two seasons, winning the Belgian Cup and finishing as the runner-up for the BNXT Championship in 2023-24.
Both Harris and Muya are extremely excited about the potential of their partnership. "Guy turned Antwerp into a BNXT powerhouse, and he has experience in all facets of international basketball. Our staff is very knowledgeable when it comes to college basketball, and that knowledge carries over to the G League, the place where many college guys land at first. Adding Guy will expand our knowledge base and complement our staff, making us even more effective," Harris said. Muya agrees, "I am thrilled to be a part of Hoops Prospects, which is now positioned to offer crucial guidance to both college and international teams, especially those with a need to effectively evaluate transfers in the portal or free agents coming from college or the G League."
