Compact Virtualization Platform Replaces Rackmount Servers, Eliminating Server Room Costs

POMONA, Calif. - Californer -- IEI Technology USA Corp. today announced that a manufacturer deploying an autonomous mobile robot (AMR) fleet management system has adopted IEI's iVEC (IEI Virtualization Edge Computer) to replace a costly commercial rackmount server, significantly reducing total cost of ownership while improving deployment speed and remote maintainability.

The Challenge

The customer originally ran its AMR management software on a commercial rackmount server, which required a dedicated server room, expensive rack hardware, and licensed third-party backup software. Combined with the cost of server room construction, installation, and ongoing maintenance, total deployment expense became a significant barrier for a manufacturer prioritizing durability and cost efficiency when scaling AMR adoption across facilities. The customer needed a platform offering sufficient compute performance, fast backup and recovery without expensive licensing, remote support that did not depend on leased lines or a private network, and a meaningfully lower installation overhead than a traditional rack-based deployment.

The Solution

IEI USA delivered the iVEC all-in-one edge computing platform, migrating the AMR management system into a virtualized environment. The compact, industrial-grade unit features an Intel® Core™ i9 processor, delivering up to 32 virtual CPUs with AVX support for accelerated compute — sufficient for a single AMR management system without the expense of a Xeon-based rackmount server. Built-in backup and recovery capabilities eliminated the need for commercial third-party backup software, while a web-based management interface enabled rapid on-site support and remote administration through IEI Remote Management (iRM). Because iVEC can be deployed directly on the shop floor and share existing AMR Wi-Fi infrastructure, the customer avoided the cost and lead time of building a dedicated server room.

Results

The new architecture cut backup software costs, improved remote maintenance in sites without dedicated network, and lowered installation cost through rack-free deployment. iVEC's Jump Server further gave IT and OT teams controlled remote access for vendor troubleshooting—no VPN or private network required. This capability proved especially valuable in facilities lacking a dedicated WAN, where the platform still supported reliable remote maintenance via local Wi-Fi or a mobile hotspot. The result is an AMR fleet management platform that deploys faster, costs significantly less, and simplifies ongoing operations — without compromising performance or reliability.
