Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach is taking steps towards a greener and more sustainable future with the launch of their Urban Forest Plan (UFP). A virtual kickoff meeting will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 28 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. to introduce the UFP to community members and gather their input.

The meeting, which will be held virtually on Zoom, is being organized by the Office of Climate Action & Sustainability in partnership with local nonprofit City Fabrick. Community members are invited to register and participate in the event, where they will learn about the UFP and its importance, as well as share their ideas, priorities, and experiences with Long Beach's trees.

To ensure accommodation for all attendees, interpretation services in Spanish, Khmer, and Tagalog will be available upon request. The feedback gathered at the meeting will play a crucial role in shaping the UFP. The plan aims to evaluate the current state of the City's tree canopy and maintenance practices, identify neighborhoods in need of new tree plantings, set community-informed goals for equity and sustainability, recommend best practices for tree care and policy improvements, and support long-term investment in the City's tree canopy.

In addition to this virtual kickoff meeting, the City also launched a community survey in August to gather input from residents on their experiences with trees and ideas for improving access to green spaces citywide. Community members are encouraged to continue sharing their feedback by completing the survey before Friday, Oct. 31.

The UFP aligns with several adopted City plans such as the Land Use Element, Open Space Element, Parks Strategic Plan, Specific Plans, as well as priorities outlined in initiatives like Westside Promise and Racial Equity and Reconciliation Plan. It also supports the City's Strategic Vision 2030 by focusing on sustainability, equity, and quality of life.

Hannah Vasilis from the Office of Climate Action and Sustainability, who serves as the Urban Forest Coordinator, can be contacted for media inquiries at Hannah.Vasilis@longbeach.gov or 562.570.5982.
