Firm honored by CASH & AIA California for innovative K–8 campus blending modern design with agricultural character, flexible learning environments, and high-performance features that support student success and community connection statewide impact
TRACY, Calif. - Californer -- PJHM Architects has earned the New Built Award of Merit in the Leroy F. Greene Design & Planning Awards for its design of Corral Hollow Elementary School, a K–8 campus within the Jefferson School District. Presented by the Coalition for Adequate School Housing (CASH) and the American Institute of Architects, California (AIA CA), the awards program has recognized excellence in school facilities design across California since 1991.
Corral Hollow Elementary School was recognized for its thoughtful balance of contemporary architectural design with the character and authenticity of the surrounding community. Drawing inspiration from regional agricultural building traditions, PJHM Architects incorporated architectural elements such as pitched roofs and board-and-batten siding, creating a modern interpretation of familiar rural forms while establishing a welcoming and distinctive campus identity.
More on The Californer
Set on a 14-acre site, the K–8 campus was shaped through a dynamic and collaborative planning process involving district leaders, educators, and staff. The project reflects a shared vision to create a school that embodies a holistic educational philosophy while strengthening connections between students, educators, and the broader community.
The campus features flexible learning environments designed to support modern educational practices, with classrooms that move beyond traditional layouts through adaptable furniture and configurations that support collaboration, small-group work, and individualized learning. Interior and exterior spaces balance public and private zones, creating a dynamic educational experience across a variety of learning settings.
Natural light, warm materials, integrated technology, and strong connections to outdoor spaces enrich the learning experience. Shared spaces—including the multipurpose room, library, and outdoor learning areas—serve as hubs for interaction, enrichment, and flexible learning opportunities.
Jurors praised the project's contextual design approach, noting: "This project is modern but very fitting for the local community. The finishes were simple and appealing, high quality and effective, and the drop-off area is great."
