Interpretation at City Council and Committee Meetings

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Oct. 2, 2023) – Spanish and Vietnamese interpreters are now on-hand at all City of San José City Council and Council Committee meetings, both in-person and virtually.

Approximately 57% of San José residents speak a language other than English at home, with Spanish and Vietnamese being among the most common. The City recognizes the critical need for language equity and is committed to integrating language access practices throughout the organization.

Embedding interpreters at every City Council and Council Committee meeting will improve access for non-English speakers and enhance dialogue and engagement between the City and San José's diverse residents.

"The investment to provide Spanish and Vietnamese interpretation at Council meetings will open the door to civic engagement to neighbors across our city," said Mayor Matt Mahan. "I want to thank those in my office, and other Council offices who stepped up to provide support to those trying to make their voices heard while the City Clerk's Office worked to fill this gap in access."

"As a Spanish speaker, who has had to wait for interpretation at a past meeting, I'm thankful the City has introduced this service and look forward to being a more active participant at upcoming meetings," said Sandra Munoz Deras of Fair Workplace Collaborative, which provides information and education to working people and business owners across Santa Clara County.

"Interpretation services are now provided by the City at no cost to members of the public," explains Toni Taber, City Clerk. "Access to interpretation is part of ensuring that we operate as an equitable and inclusive City."

The City Council meets most Tuesdays at 1:30 p.m. at the San José City Hall Council Chambers or by Zoom.

Council Committees meet once per month:
  • The Community and Economic Development Committee (CED) meets on the fourth Monday of the month at 1:30 p.m.
  • The Neighborhood Services and Education Committee (NSE) meets on the second Thursday of the month at 1:30 p.m.
  • The Public Safety, Finance, and Strategic Support Committee (PSFSS) meets on the third Thursday of the month at 1:30 p.m.
  • The Transportation and Environment Committee (T&E) meets the first Monday of the month at 1:30 p.m.
Meeting participants can access interpretation services via the Zoom link or at the meeting location. Dates may change due to holidays; members of the public are encouraged to confirm meeting dates, times, agendas, and zoom links on the City's website: https://www.sanjoseca.gov/your-government/appointees/city-clerk/council-agendas-minutes.

Interpretation in other languages, including American Sign Language, must be requested via email to the City Clerk's office (city.clerk@sanjoseca.gov) at least four days before the meeting.

Aproximadamente el 57 % de los residentes de San José hablan un idioma distinto al inglés en casa, siendo el español y el vietnamita dos de los más comunes. La Ciudad reconoce la necesidad fundamental de equidad lingüística y está comprometida a integrar prácticas de acceso lingüístico en toda la organización.

La incorporación de intérpretes en cada reunión del Concejo Municipal y de sus comités mejorará el acceso para personas que no hablan inglés; asimismo, mejorará el diálogo y la participación entre la Ciudad y los residentes diversos de San José.

"La inversión para brindar interpretación en español y vietnamita en las reuniones del Concejo abrirá la puerta a la participación cívica de los vecinos de toda nuestra ciudad", dijo el alcalde Matt Mahan.   • El Comité de Transporte y Medio Ambiente (T&E) se reúne el primer lunes del mes a la 1:30 p.m.

Khoảng 57% cư dân San José nói ngôn ngữ khác tiếng Anh tại nhà, trong đó tiếng Tây Ban Nha và tiếng Việt nằm trong số những thứ tiếng phổ biến nhất. Thành Phố nhận thấy nhu cầu cấp thiết về bình đẳng ngôn ngữ và cam kết sẽ lồng ghép các hoạt động tiếp cận ngôn ngữ trên khắp tổ chức.

Việc có thêm các thông dịch viên có mặt tại từng cuộc họp của Hội Đồng Thành Phố và Ủy Ban Hội Đồng sẽ cải thiện khả năng tiếp cận cho những người không nói tiếng Anh đồng thời tăng cường đối thoại và tương tác giữa các nhóm cư dân đa dạng của San José và Thành Phố.

"Việc đầu tư cung cấp dịch vụ thông dịch tiếng Tây Ban Nha và tiếng Việt tại các cuộc họp Hội Đồng sẽ mở ra cánh cửa tương tác với công dân ở các khu phố trên khắp thành phố", trích lời Thị Trưởng Matt Mahan.
