After months of remote learning due to the devastating Southern California fires that damaged their school site in Pacific Palisades, the entire student population of over 2,400 students gathered at a new temporary location in Santa Monica – a former Sears store that has been converted into a campus.
Governor Newsom expressed his joy at seeing the school community come together again for in-person instruction. He praised the partnership and collaboration between state and local officials that made this new site possible, highlighting it as a symbol of resilience and recovery for the Palisades community.
While this temporary location is not their regular site, it is a crucial step forward as the community continues to rebuild and rise together. The original Palisades Charter High School site was cleared of debris last month, allowing for the school's return to in-person learning. With this development, all eight public schools that were damaged by the Eaton and Palisades fires have now resumed in-person instruction.

The Administration has made supporting schools and getting students back into classrooms quickly a top priority since the fires first broke out. Governor Newsom previously signed an executive order to accelerate California's children's return to in-person learning and provide assistance to schools. He also directed that school sites be prioritized in the debris removal process so that rebuilding can begin promptly and safely.
In February, when state and federal partners launched the structural debris removal process, they held their announcement at a school site that had already been cleared – emphasizing their commitment to getting schools up and running as soon as possible.
