Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - As Tsunami Preparedness Week approaches from March 22-30, the City of Long Beach Department of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications is urging residents to take action and prepare for potential tsunamis. In support of this initiative, the City will be hosting a Tsunami Preparedness Fair on Saturday, March 29 at Will Rogers Mini Park.
Mayor Rex Richardson emphasized the importance of being prepared for tsunamis in a statement, saying, "We are fortunate to live on the Pacific Rim with miles of beautiful beaches and oceanfront views; however, with that comes the threat of tsunamis." He added that the fair will provide opportunities for residents to learn more about tsunamis and practice their evacuation plans.
The fair will feature expert speakers and resource booths from various City departments and regional emergency management agencies. These booths will provide educational materials and tips on how to be prepared for a tsunami at home, work or school. Additionally, there will be a Tsunami Walk where participants can simulate an evacuation and receive resources and preparedness tips from Disaster Preparedness staff.

Reginald Harrison, Director of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications, stressed the importance of being aware of warning signs before a tsunami hits. "Tsunamis are a rare but real threat to our community. Unlike earthquakes, however, tsunamis provide natural warnings before they arrive," he said.
Residents are encouraged to take several actions in order to better prepare themselves for a potential tsunami. This includes knowing if they live or work in a tsunami hazard zone by visiting the My Hazards webpage, developing a family emergency plan (available in English and Spanish), learning the signs of an approaching tsunami, being ready to evacuate when necessary, signing up for Alert Long Beach notifications from the city, following @lbdisasterprep on social media for year-round preparedness tips, preparing a go-bag with essential items for each family member and pet, and downloading the Tsunami Preparedness Guide in English or Spanish.

The City also encourages residents to be self-sufficient for up to five days following a disaster by creating an emergency supply kit and joining the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) or taking classes through the American Red Cross to learn basic emergency medical procedures.
For those interested in participating in Tsunami Preparedness Week, they can visit the Statewide California Earthquake Center's website, TsunamiZone.org. The City of Long Beach also has a variety of resources available on their Department of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications website and on their social media pages.
As residents prepare for Tsunami Preparedness Week, they are reminded to stay informed, develop evacuation plans, and practice them regularly. By taking these steps, they can help ensure the safety of themselves and their loved ones in the event of a tsunami.
